Subterranean Solutions is now your North American representative for Poltinger Precision Systems (PPS) out of Munich, Germany. The "At A Glance" format is a favorite among TBM operators for its user friendly operations and easy to read pertinent values to support the operator in maintaining alignment and grade during mining operations.
PPS is pioneering once again, offering solutions when using Leica, Trimle and Topcon robotic totalstations!
Roadheader guidance uses the exact same components as the TBM system except the components need to have the radio communication option switched on. All components have a switch to change from cable communication to radio as an added option for TBM use. Essentially, once you have a full system, it could be used on both TBM or Roadheader excavations simply by running either TBM4.3 or RH4 software.
Currently, laser guidance is mainly used for smaller diameter tunnel excavations or for short straight runs. Precision Beam Deflectors (PBD's) are used in conjunction with the laser guidance when the alignment includes curved sections. The deflection angles can be set both horizontally as well as vertically to accommodate job specific variables. Using the PBD's greatly increases production and longevity since the deflection of the laser can be achieved closer to the heading which also allows a larger deflection than deflecting from the laser stand itself.
Although running the TBM4.3 software is all that is needed to maintain line and grade, we offer many additional modules for more job specific requirements such as:
Data Logging for all PLC information recorded in real time,
Real time viewing of mining operations on office computers as well as mobile devices,
Ring-selection-assistant for TBMs using segment erection,
Tail-gap-system for input of tail gap values,
and more!

The RH4 software also has job specific options such as:
Data Logging for all PLC information recorded in real time and,
Real time viewing of mining operations on office computers as well as mobile devices,
Cut Log 3D pointcloud of cutterhead positions,
Rockbolter Guidance for rockbolting drill rigs,
Collision Warning for boom to apron and,
Boom Control slowing or stopping the boom automatically with regards to the tunnel profile, and more!

Many variables are used to calculate the allowable deflection for your particular needs. The size of the laser window is surprisingly not a concern. If the laser can make it to the heading, there is enough room to set a PBD.
The Middle Ordinate dictates the allowable deflection. This is normally the horizontal distance from the centerline on the target to the edge of target.
